Windows That Make Your Home More Efficient: An Interview with Tim Waddell of World of Windows, Inc.

By Tim Waddell

Please describe the background of your company and your qualifications.

We are a locally owned and operated family business, which is a franchise of Window World Inc. the largest replacement window company in the USA. We operate under World of Windows of the Carolinas, Inc., and my wife and I own the franchise. We are native North Carolinians, and most of our windows are made in North Carolina. We enjoy operating a business which sells American made products, especially products made in our state. Our daughter is our office manager, and our son-in-law is our salesman, so our entire family is active in the business. Since 1995, we have sold and installed more than 10,000,000 (yes, 10 million) windows across the country through more than 200 franchises. Over the last five years we have sold and installed in excess of 1,000,000 windows every year. So we have tremendous experience in our area of expertise. Our Organization has chosen to support two very important charities: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and The Veteran's Airlift Command. Over the last 4 ½ years between our customers, franchise owners, and our Corporate Office we have contributed more than $4.5 million to Window World Cares our non-profit which support these charities.

In addition to energy efficient windows we also install entry door systems, sliding patio doors, storm doors, garage doors, gutters and gutter guards, radiant attic barrier, and siding. Our custom made vinyl windows come with a lifetime warranty that is transferable, and the warranty covers material and labor, making it one of the best warranties in the business. Many of our other products also carry a lifetime warranty, and are designed to help make homes more energy efficient.

Can these windows help me reduce my energy costs?

Our new energy efficient replacement windows will definitely help home owners reduce their energy consumption. Windows are rated with the U-factor or U-Value, and SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient). The lower these thermal ratings are means the thermal performance of the window is better. Our Solarzone Elite energy package uses a low-e coating and argon gas to make the windows extremely energy efficient. Since homeowners in the Carolinas spend 9 months out of the year cooling their homes, the Solarzone Elite option is a great choice. With the Solarzone Elite our U-Value is .28 and SHGC .21, or less. The low-e coating reflects most of the sun's energy back away from the home, so it isn't heating up the interior air of the home. The argon gas between the glass helps to keep the heat outside, and the cool air inside. In the winter the low-e coating will allow some energy of the sun's energy into the home when the sun is at a lower angle, and the argon gas works in reverse keeping the cold outside, and the heat inside, thereby saving energy year round.

The other factor, that often homeowners aren't aware they should consider in their decision, is air infiltration. The air infiltration rating on our windows is as low as .04. To give you an idea of how much this can vary from other companies, some window air infiltration ratings are as high as .30, and can be even higher. The higher the air infiltration rating, the more times you will have to re-condition the indoor air due to the air leakage. So a window with a .30 air infiltration rating, will allow 7.5 times more air leakage than our window with a .04.

Why does my home need fade protection from the sun?

Yes, the ultraviolet rays of the sun radiant and fade everything, especially floors, furniture, and other interior furnishings. The low-e coating blocks the majority of these ultraviolet rays, and greatly reduces the fading.

How do these windows help control the temperature in my home?

The Solarzone low-e and argon reduce the heat gain and heat loss, so the temperatures inside your home is easier to maintain. The rooms are more evenly comfortable, and the HVAC system is not working as hard to maintain the desired temperature. The energy efficiency of the windows also can extend the life of the HVAC system because it doesn't work as hard with new energy efficient windows.

What are some other window options you offer?

Our vinyl windows come in many colors, and even woodgrains now, so homeowners do not have to use white windows. There are 9 exterior colors, and 8 interior colors available to choose from. We also offer privacy options in both obscure glass, and even in acrylic block window options for bathrooms, or wherever more privacy is needed. We also make many different types of windows, casements, sliding windows, awning windows, fixed windows, and even special shapes.

What are some other benefits associate with the Vinyl Windows?

Our 100% virgin vinyl windows beautify your home, and reduce the maintenance necessary to keep your home looking new. This allows you to save money, and to spend more time doing what you enjoy instead of painting and repairing your home. We can also install a custom aluminum trim over the immediate wooden brick molding, and sills around the window, which also adds to the reduced maintenance necessary to maintain your home. This custom trim also means the wooden trim will no longer need to be painted, and will not rot, which can be very expensive to repair if left unattended. New energy efficient replacement windows also increase your homes resale value, and allow you to enjoy the days during the year when you can open your windows to take advantage of great weather. Our windows are also made to easily be cleaned both interior and exterior, from the comfort of the interior of your home using our tilt-in sashes.
