By Dean Allen

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Refined Hardwood Flooring has been in business since 1993 and is a full service hardwood flooring contractor. We specialize in installation, sanding and finishing, repairs and borders and inlays. We are long standing members of the National Wood Flooring Association and one of our owners, Dean Allen, was a membership committee member in 2012.

What are the main decisions that people need to make when it comes to choosing new hardwood flooring?

The main decisions that potential clients need to consider prior to deciding on a hardwood floor is the realistic expectation of functionality of their new floor system. Just because it is wood, does not mean it will perform to their desires or expectations. Educate yourself and choose a knowledgeable professional that can and will guide you in the right direction.

What type(s) of hardwood floors work best for high-traffic areas (and why)?

Floors that perform the best in high traffic areas are the species that are ranked higher on the Janka scale. The Janka scale is the measurement of hardness in a relative floor. The higher on the scale, the harder the floor. Harder floors will, obviously, help to mitigate soft grain pitting and early wear patterns. The type of finish on the floor also plays a huge factor. This is another reason it is important to choose a professional that is knowledgeable in their field.

What are some of the most popular hardwood flooring options for homeowners?

There are a lot of popular choices for homeowners when it comes to a hardwood floor system. A solid wood floor is always a great choice, however, not all homes can have a solid floor. The engineered hardwood market has come a long way over the years and there are hundreds of great choices there as well. Based on pure numbers, solid wood floors still seem to be the most popular, with the domestic Oaks leading those products.

Can you explain how to properly maintain hardwood floors so they last longer and still look good?

Properly maintaining a hardwood floor is the most important thing that a wood floor owner can do to prolong their floor system. Catch rugs at all entry points and weekly cleanings are a must! Having said that, the days of vinegar and water are effectively over. A good hardwood floor cleaner and a terry cloth mop are the best options for cleaning. Wipe up all spills quickly, and watch unnecessary moisture introduction into your home. For example, if your floor system is acclimated to a constant 73 degrees, don't bump the thermostat up to 80 when you go on vacation. This can increase humidity, thus causing a spike in moisture content.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to install hardwood floors but has a limited budget?

Limited budget projects can sometimes be difficult to work with when it comes to a hardwood floor installation. My advice to those on a limited budget is to be up front with your flooring professional. Give them an idea of what you are working with and I promise they can better accommodate your needs.
