What are some of the biggest benefits of building a second-story addition to a house?

A second story addition will allow additional space without the cost of foundation and grading necessary to add a first floor addition. Also, this type of addition will benefit those homeowners who are limited with the overall structure footprint space. This will especially benefit those in a tight city limit or development neighborhood.

Can you list the basic steps involved with designing and building a second-story addition?

The basic steps include zoning and homeowner association approval along with engineering and design work. Once these are completed and approved, the homeowner should contact at least two qualified contractors to submit estimates for the work.

Can you talk about some of the challenges that a homeowner might face?

The challenges are many with adding or remodeling a home. After cost and design work, the biggest challenge will be whether to live in the home during construction or move out while the work is completed. It is very difficult to occupy a space while the work is taking place as it slows progress and is not practical to clean to original condition daily.

What should homeowners take into consideration before deciding they want to build a second-story addition?

As mentioned before, cost, design, engineering and inconvenience while construction is taking place.

Do you have any tips to help people make the process as easy and stress-free as possible?

Do your homework and planning ahead of time. Knowing exactly what you want and getting your bids will take a few months. Be prepared and patient.
