Siding Installation Process: An Interview with Tony Wood of Wood's Home Maintenance Service

By Tony Wood

Tell us about your company and its foundation.

I originally founded Wood's Home Maintenance Service in 1989. Back then It was just called "Home Maintenance Service." We primarily did maintenance, repair, power washing and painting. Because of strong customer demand we quickly branched out to provide a complete line of home maintenance, repair and building solutions. Although WHMS is still a small family owned company we have expanded our services to include a wide variety of interior and exterior projects. With over 30 years of experience there are few facets of the building trades that we are not familiar with.

What are some of the services your company offers?

Our services include repair and replacement of damaged siding and trim, wood rot and structural repair, roof repair, window and door replacement, decks, screen and glass rooms, vinyl siding, vinyl windows, framing, boxing, interior trim, laminate and pre-finished hardwood floor installation, and handyman services.

Please explain the typical siding installation process from start to finish.

Any siding installation project should start by ensuring there is a sound substrate. In new construction this is not an issue, however many re-siding projects require replacement of warped or decayed wall sheeting or even structural repairs to the framing. If the house wrap, which is a weather resistant barrier, is damaged or missing it should be replaced also. Decayed , warped or split trim, such as corner boards or the brick molding found around windows and doors should be replaced to provide a sound surface for the siding to butt against. Vinyl siding is sometimes installed over existing siding if it is sound or the steps outlined above have been completed. Most other types of siding require any old siding to be removed prior to installation. All siding should be nailed, flashed and caulked according to the manufacturers recommendations, to ensure both a quality installation and maintain warranty coverage.

What type of material needs to be applied to a house before applying siding?

As I indicated above housewrap should go on before the siding. The unique properties of housewrap are critical to the integrity of the siding project and to ensure warranty coverage. It not only serves as the last line of defense against water infiltration into the framing of the house but also allows water vapor to escape from inside the walls.

This ability to "breath" prevents the buildup of excess moisture inside the walls of a home which can lead to mold growth and decay.

Proper flashing is also crucial to a quality siding or re-siding project. Unlike chimney flashing which is visible most siding flashing is hidden behind the siding. This makes clear the importance of choosing a reputable company, as siding installed by improperly trained, poorly motivated or unscrupulous, contractors or their employees may appear fine but not be properly sealed and not meet warranty requirements.

How long does it typically take to side a home?

Depending on the size of a home and it's condition a siding project can take as little as a few days up to several weeks. Most houses can be completed in one to two weeks. As with many construction projects, the weather also plays a role in both scheduling the work and it's duration.

Do clients pay for material and work, or how is the price calculated?

After meeting with a prospective client to discuss the scope of the project ,we provide a written proposal, based on their needs and any recommendations we made. The proposal details the specifics of the work to be done and the exact cost of the project. If the client accepts our proposal it is converted to contract form which also details the draw schedule. Although each project is unique most contracts require a deposit ranging from one third to one half the contract total to begin the project with the balance due upon satisfactory completion of the work.

What is the best way to contact you and your business?

Our office number is 919-553-7924 , however as a small company we are often at the job site where it is not always convenient to answer the phone. If we are unable to answer your call, please leave a message and someone will get back to you in the order in which your call was received.

The best way to get a quick response is by filling out the appointment request form on our website. Go to and click the CONTACT WHMS button to access the form.
