Preparing For The Storm

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

Hurricanes or tropical storms are always possible in North Carolina. While any storm creates some damage, there are ways to protect your home and personal property. From getting the right insurance coverage to staying connected, use this checklist to better prepare for the storm.

Plan Ahead

Take photos of the home inside and out. Get detailed shots of valuables and include any serial numbers. Use the personal property inventory checklist you can get from your insurance agent. Be certain your insurance provides protection from both water and wind.

Prepare Property

Here are key ways to prepare your property before a storm:

  • Have a solid, firmly attached and well maintained roof with no holes. Try installing a new hurricane-strength synthetic tile roof for better protection and a lower homeowner insurance cost.
  • Make sure backup generators have fuel.
  • Secure all outdoor equipment or move heavy items to high and open ground.
  • Shut off gas and propane until storm has passed.
  • Board up doors and windows.
  • Move valuables and documents to upper levels.
  • Move vehicles inside garages or barns.

Pack Supplies

Pack plenty of non-perishable food and fresh bottled water in case the storm hits your area hard. If you take prescription medication, make sure you have enough for a few weeks, at least. Keep a flashlight, portable radio with new batteries and warm clothes with you at all times. Pack medical and food supplies in waterproof containers.

Stay Connected

Have a system for contacting neighbors to make sure they are alright and to know when to get help after the storm. Be able to stay in touch with friends and family and share that information with neighbors in case you are hurt. Have insurance information and city, county and state disaster numbers available. Keep all important paperwork and numbers in a safe, waterproof container.
