Pat's Place :Fighting Sexual Abuse with Protection and Support

By Christian Burney

Patricia, or "Pat", Wolfe, was a passionate advocate of child welfare. She spent time as a juvenile court counselor, social worker, and case advocate, and was famous within her community for her compassion. She often spent money out of her own pocket to provide clothing, food, and other services to children in need. Pat was involved in the process of establishing an advocacy center for child victims of sexual abuse when she tragically passed away in 2000. Development on the advocacy center endured, and the center adopted the name "Pat's Place." Today, the center continues to spread the help and support that Pat had dedicated much of her life to.

Pat's Place offers a number of services to children and their families, from family support, resource referrals, and court support, to medical examinations in partnership with Levine Children's Hospital. Pat's Place works in coordination with law enforcement, medical and mental health workers, child protective services, and other relevant professional entities to ensure that every child's wellbeing is protected.

Pat's Place relies on the tremendous support of the Charlotte and Mecklenburg County community. "All of the services that Pat's Place provides children facing sexual abuse are at no charge to the families," says Amy Amico, Associate Director of Development and Communications. "For this reason, the community can support the organization through financial contributions to ensure that the organization continues to strengthen and expand services." Pat's Place has a vision, to end sexual abuse, and it needs the support of the community to make that happen.

The nonprofit has seen a lot of success since its debut 10 years ago. On July 30th, the facility threw a Birthday Party in celebration of all the partnerships with community programs that have since been developed. "We had a great turnout and some impressive speakers offering their well wishes," says Amico. The District Attorney, Chief of CMPD, Director of Social Services, and Carolinas Healthcare all gave their best at the event.

Sexual abuse is a serious crime that can affect a child in later stages of his or her life. It's thanks to Pat's Place and the support of its partners that victims of abuse can receive the love and support they need to carry forward. Patricia Wolfe would be proud to see the progress her community has made.
