On Keeping Your Ducts and HVAC System Clean: An Interview with Brian McDonald of Outer Banks Heating and Cooling

By Brian McDonald

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Outer Banks Heating and Cooling has been in business since 1987 and employ about 26 people. We offer complete HVAC services from installation in new and existing homes to service and service agreements and duct cleaning. We also offer home performance testing and repairs through our Dr. Energy Saver® division. We have a certified HERS Rater on staff as well as two staff members that are licensed general contractors.

What are the toughest indoor air quality issues for homes on the Outer Banks?

High humidity.

Please explain the basics of how these issues are professionally treated?

Proper sizing of HVAC systems, proper air sealing of building penetrations and possibly dehumidification systems.

What are other common duct issues that homeowners should be aware of?

Air leaks and debris left over from construction. We routinely find beer cans, soda cans, pieces of drywall and all sorts of debris in the duct systems left over from construction. Some of it is over 20 years old. Animals also will gain access to duct systems and if they defecate in the ducts or die inside them it can be a serious health issue.

If left untreated, what are some examples of how HVAC systems and people can be affected?

People with allergies and compromised immune systems can be seriously affected by contaminated and unclean duct systems.

What can homeowners do to help make sure their duct system is always running optimally?

Have it inspected annually, if it has not been cleaned have it inspected internally to see if it needs to be cleaned, if it's an older duct system have it pressure tested to confirm it meets at least code standards for leakage to outdoors or a unconditioned space.
