Making Your Move Greener: An Interview with Truckin' Movers

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Since 1976, Truckin' Movers Corporation has offered strategic move and storage solutions to home and commercial clients. We are an innovative, dependable, locally owned and operated full-service moving and storage company based in Durham, North Carolina and serving all destinations- local, national and international. We will move any size shipment, safely and affordably, to any destination worldwide. Over the years, we have moved families to every continent except Antarctica! Truckin Movers is also a state-of-the-art storage company. We provide full-service and self-service storage; and we sell and deliver packing material whether you are using us as your mover or not.

What is your position at Truckin' Movers?

I am the President and an original founder of Truckin' Movers. I am still intimately involved in daily operations and personally insure that each and every client has a stress-free move.

What sets your moving services apart from competition in your area?

Our success is built one great move at a time. We have listened to our clients and understand that their top-three concerns with moving companies are delivery spreads, broken or missing items and billing up-charges. So we've designed our services to eliminate these concerns. At Truckin' Movers, we believe that your household should ship on time, damage-free and for the contracted price.

We offer our clients exact delivery dates for shipping in the Continental United States. Most other move companies use a move spread, also called a delivery window in which they tell their customers that they will receive their belongings at some point over a three to seven day period. We work with our clients to in advance to coordinate an exact delivery date so that their valuables ship on their schedule, not ours.

Not only are our professional movers trained to give your belongings "white-glove treatment," at Truckin' Movers we also offer a unique, damage-free, bonus system that further works to incentivize great client care. Our move crews earn a bonus whenever a move is 100% damage-free from load to unload in our moving trucks. They earn another bonus based on overall customer satisfaction as determined by a post-move Goodwill Survey.

Clear, written communication is the key to a stress-free move. Our move consultants will perform an on-site survey, employing our custom-software to accurately assess your inventory and unique move needs. We will then prepare a written move estimate, so that there is no room for misunderstanding, either in billing or the move particulars. We will never hurry our clients- we believe that investing our time and expertise in crafting the ideal custom-move plan is what creates a great, stress-free move.

How early should a homeowner contact your company before the day of their move?

Logistical planning and move strategies benefit from thorough, detailed analysis. The sooner we can begin to work with our clients, the more effective we can be in insuring a high-quality move at an affordable rate. It is a good idea to contact a professional mover as soon as you plan to move, and at least thirty to sixty-days of notice is ideal. In particular, clients moving in the months of May through September should be aware that this time period represents the busy season for move companies and that shipping schedules can quickly fill.

What specific qualities should a customer look for in a qualified and reliable moving company?

We encourage our clients to start by shopping around. Get three bids from top moving companies that have great reviews and seek a professional mover that offers exact move dates, guaranteed in advance.

Ask about their workforce- full time professionals, who are trained and encouraged with fair wages and benefits to stick with the company and gain years of experience will give your personal belongings the valuable treatment they deserve. Inquire about transport agility and strategy- find a mover that can offer you the scheduling you need. Don't settle for an open ended "service window."

And finally, never move without a thorough move plan reviewed and approved by you. Get a move estimate in writing before you hire a mover. In addition to information on move costs, it should include a detailed list of the items being moved and notes specific to your unique requirements.

What are some common mistakes made during the moving process where you can offer assistance?

Many customers do not allow enough time for any packing of small items they plan to do. With our unique move software we are able to tell the customer how much time they need to pack these items.

Customers are often unprepared to receive items at their new home. They have not decided in advance where items will be placed, and/or they only have one person present to receive the items and direct the unloaders. The final part of your pre-move process is called the "final prep." This is a phone conversation we have with the client during which we go over a checklist of discussion items. During this conversation we explain how to be prepared on moving day, both at the origin and the destination homes.

Moving is one of life's most stressful endeavors. Give the process time, time to find a professional mover, time to conduct an accurate, on-site inventory, time to secure a written move plan and estimate that fits your unique needs, time to pack, and time to unpack.
