Commercial and Residential Remodeling Since 1986: An Interview with Custom Renovations

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Custom Renovations, Inc. is a 26 year remodeling co. that does residential and light commercial renovation projects. We do kitchen and bath remodeling, build screened porches, sunrooms, and small home additions.

What is your position at Custom Renovations?

I am President of CRI.

What are some of the benefits of a finished attic?

A finished attic can give a home separate and additional space for inlaws, kids spaces, office space, etc. When finished ,this space can appreciate a homes value as much as $115.00 a square foot. In some areas even more value can be gained.

What are some of your ideas for home addition considerations?

Many older homes benefit by turning smaller spaces into one large space. Removing an interior wall between two rooms and adding an LVL (laminated beam) above is a popular way to achieve this new space. A garage, or screened porch addition is a more affordable way to gain interior space and give a homes exterior a new look as well as a larger appearance. These unheated, partially finished spaces are less expensive to build and give added space to a home in additional storage and work space.

Now that we're entering the winter months, what are some of your winter remodeling ideas?

A few ideas for winter projects are replacement windows , and doors if your home has dated windows and doors that aren't efficient. Any interior project that won't interfere with the families holiday schedule or make their living space too uncomfortable could be a good winter project. If you're in a reasonably mild area, a screened porch or sunroom could be a good winter project. Finishing in the winter would allow the space to be enjoyed the coming spring and summer season.

What are some tips for customers trying to create a beautiful space on a tight budget?

Customers on a tight budget can consider doing their on demolition of existing walls, fixtures, etc. Many people are taking on the painting at the end of a large project. The local Habitat stores are a good source to purchase good used fixtures such as cabinets, doors, windows, even plumbing fixtures are available at these stores.

What are some steps homeowners should keep in mind during the remodeling process?

Make sure you have ample space on your property and the municipality will allow the space you're considering . In some cases a bedroom can't be added because of septic requirements. Property Set backs can keep a homeowner from adding space to their home. Check your local permitting office before starting a project. A good design and organized plan will make things go smoother during a large remodeling project.

I feel homeowners should be aware that people are going to be in their personal space when a large project is taking place in their home. This can be a shock to some and will go on for a while in some cases. A room addition takes several months and in some cases many months. Check out the company before you hire them . Any good company will have references and should even offer to let you visit a past project or two if you would like to see the end result first hand.

What are some key qualities that a homeowner should expect from a good design and remodeling company?

A good design and good remodeling company can make your project run smooth , greatly appreciate the property value by turning out a quality job , and be enjoyable and beautiful space to live in when completed. A poorly planned space and inexperienced contractor can make a project difficult to endure and turn an unsatisfied result in the end. These projects can be very dusty and destructive to your personal items such as furniture, electronics, and appliances.
