Tell us a little bit about your experience, company history and the services you offer.

Kelli Jordan is the owner and Principal Designer of KJ Design Works. She is a North Carolina Native, and has lived in the Raleigh area since 1990. That is when she began her journey as a young adult at North Carolina State University, majoring in Business. Upon finishing college, Kelli began a career in outside corporate sales, but always had a longing for her true passion of Interior Design. As a child she would sketch schematic floor plans, and then draw in furniture for each room. Since 1997 Kelli has redesigned many homes in the Raleigh area, and worked with several local builders in the Triangle and the Triad, helping them to achieve winning "Gold" in the Parade of Homes.

KJ Design Works offers customized, professional design expertise without the expensive overhead cost of working with large firms. Specializing in Interior Design, Space Planning, Home Staging, and installation for a variety of clients. Understanding what the client's needs are and what they would like to accomplish in redesigning their space is the first step to a successful creation.

What is a common misconception that people have about hiring an interior designer?

The biggest misconception about hiring an Interior Designer is that it's too expensive. Many people automatically assume that Design Services are costly and outside of their budget. In reality, hiring an expert to guide you through a design project can save you time and money. KJ Design Works has already done the leg work in finding reputable contractors for hire to complete most any Design Project. In addition, we can assist with the overwhelming selection process of new materials, whether it be counter-tops, backsplash designs, lighting, plumbing, paint colors, flooring, and/or appliances.

How should someone who wants professional help decorating their kitchen start the process?

The first step to remodeling a kitchen is to meet with a Designer and determine the overall goals. In many cases people are looking to add a backsplash, update appliances, and perhaps a new stone counter-top. Others may want to redesign the existing space by relocating cabinets, adding a center island, and/or expanding the home foundation to gain square footage.

What are the basic elements of a complete Kitchen design?

A functional floor plan;
Ample Countertop Space;
Appropriate Storage;
Adequate Lighting;
Appliances;
Plumbing Fixtures;
Practical and durable materials; flooring, cabinets, counters, backsplash.

How are the interior design fee and budget typically set?

Interior Design fees vary based on the scope of work. It may be an hourly rate, project based at a flat cost, or percentage based on over-all cost of the project. Every Design firm is different in how they bill for time and/or services. A project budget is set between the client and Designer once quality & style are established.

What is one of the most common regrets homeowners have when it comes to interior design choices?

Many people regret making costly decisions, because they didn't do their due diligence by consulting with an experienced professional.
