Everything You Need to Know About Custom Cabinets: An Interview with Karen Holcomb of Designing Kitchens and Baths

By Karen Holcomb

About Designing Kitchens and Baths:

Our Company is a cabinet shop with 45 consecutive years of operation, with the founding family continuing to own and operate the shop. We have many committed and loyal craftsman in their second and third decades of employment with us.

We build high-quality cabinetry of all sorts (residential & commercial) and are well-renowned for offering upscale white-glove customer service.

We work with contractors and homeowners to bring them our offerings, from the initial cabinetry design services and selections in our showroom all the way through to the installation of our cabinetry.

Custom Cabinetry:

In selecting our custom cabinetry one can be assured of the utmost care and diligence in the use of the finest grade materials available and absolute optimum use of the space available. This is true for Remodeled spaces as well as new construction.

Custom Cabinets vs. Pre-Made:

When one compares high-grade pre-made cabinets to our custom cabinetry the pricing should be fairly close. However our top of the line conversion varnish top coat is generally not achieved with pre-made cabinets and certainly the skills of our craftsmen installation teams are not always duplicated.

Construction Time:

Our high quality products take time to carefully design, construct, finish, and install so a project with us is typically ordered 10 weeks, or so, prior to site being ready for cabinet installation. A client first meets with one of our professional cabinet designers for selections and discussion of rooms and how they will be used by the family. Our designers are placement specialists and will present cabinet renderings for client review and edit. Once a client is satisfied with the drawings we place the order with our shop and the time-line clock begins ticking. We keep our contractors and homeowners fully informed of installation scheduling so all parties are ready at the appropriate time.

Current Cabinet Trends

Current trends we are now seeing is the very-streamlined Recessed Panel doors. Color trends are continuing to work with pure natural whites, but also soft Grey tones are now considered the new neutral. Quartz countertops is also a trend we are experiencing now and the simplistic lines of subway tile backsplash remain a very popular selection.
