Durham's Premier Event Venue

By David Boegaard

Established in 1987, the University Club is Durham's premier private dining club and hosts corporate and social events for its members as well as educational programs and academic celebrations. Located in the 11,000 square foot 17th floor penthouse of the University Tower, the University Club offers gourmet dining with luxurious rooms, sparkling chandeliers and unbeatable views.

At the Club, one can enjoy panoramic views of Durham, Chapel Hill and Duke Forest. It's an elegant setting for hosting any kind of special event, including weddings. Melissa Sayre, special events director, says the club markets itself as a luxury dining experience, with a meticulous and well-trained staff, expert chef, and lavish atmosphere. For those difficult to please, the Club will not disappoint- Sayre emphasizes that the staff anticipates the needs of the guests before they arrive, and also offers synchronized service. The staff can accommodate nearly any special request for an event- from a small dinner to an elaborate wedding reception.

Chef Ian Sullivan, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, keeps the menu seasonal and interesting. The Club specializes in New American cuisine with French and Italian influences and has a chophouse fare as well. Some of their most popular dishes are the buckhead filet mignon with corn-burrata puree, tomato salad, and salsa verde and the pan seared scallops with yukon gold potato, haricot vert, and tarragon-corn jus. Other items on the menu include the grilled quail with corn fritters, frisee salad and plum sauce, the sweet and sour eggplant with chickpea fries and herb salad, and the pan seared salmon with field pea succotash seared in herb butter.

Their wine list, while extensive, is carefully chosen and features diverse wines with different characteristics. There are various types of Merlot, Chardonnay, red blends, Pinot Noir, Italian varietals, Shiraz and others. The dessert selection features milk chocolate mousse, mango sorbet, melting chocolate bombe and key lime tartlet to name a few- classic choices prepared well.

Whatever the occasion, the Club's staff will make sure to accommodate your needs.
