Different Types of JamesHardie Siding Materials: An Interview with Susan Prenatt of

By Susan Prenatt

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

The company has been in existence since 1988, but has been a female owned business for the past eight years. Since then, we have won the Angie's List Super Service Award for 2010, 2011, & 2013, which only 3 per cent of contractors qualify for. Our goal is to leave a home better than we found it, and make someone's life better in the process. We use ecologically responsible non-rot materials, and pride ourselves in using the best practice as our model.

What services does your company offer?

We focus on full and partial residing of homes, along with miscellaneous exterior repairs. And have a paint crew that does interior and exterior work.

Please list 5 different types of JamesHardie siding materials that exist on the market with a short explanation/list of benefits for each:

  1. Hardie plank lap siding is the most popular brand in the U.S.
  2. Hardie shingle siding: has the same appearance as cedar shingles, but resists rotting, cracking and splitting.
  3. Hardie panels: combined with Hardie trim boards allow the homeowner to have a traditional board and batten appearance without the maintenance necessary with its wood counterpart.
  4. Hardie trim: adds a lasting finishing touch to Hardie sided homes. It is used for corner boards, fascia, gables, column wraps, house rakes, window and door trim.
  5. Hardie soffits: are available in vented and non-vented form, and in a range of pre-cut sizes.

Engineered for the climate in a particular region for strength, beauty and durability, with a strong return on investment. James Hardie siding has earned the Good Housekeeping seal of approval.

Hardie siding is a fiber-cement material, which resists insect damage, moisture and rot. It is also fire and hurricane resistant. Since it's an engineered material, it does not experience the same issues with expansion and contraction that wood based and vinyl siding material do. As a result, paint adhesion is three times that of wood siding, which reduces overall maintenance costs.

James Hardie siding has a 30-year, non-prorated, transferable, limited warranty.

Out of these types, which is the most common and why?

Hardie lap siding is the most common form of siding because it is used for repairing existing siding, as well as full replacement siding projects.

Please explain what HardieWrap is for our viewers and its benefits:

HardieWrap is a weather barrier engineered for climate, which provides a balance for water resistance and breathability. This allows moisture (water vapor) from the inside to escape, so the area within the wall remains dry.

  • Protects home from water damage
  • Allows home to breath, helping prevent conditions for mildew
  • Reduces energy loss to save money
