Choosing the Right Plants for Your Yard: An Interview with Suzanne Stallings of The Plant Park

By Suzanne Stallings

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Retail Garden Center offering high quality plant material.

What are some of the biggest mistakes that people can make when they're choosing which plants, shrubs and trees to plant on their property?

Make sure you know the location, (sun or shade), how big the plants will get and what your soil type it like. Is it well-drained or it is boggy? Knowing these things helps you make an informed decision.

Can you briefly explain some basic guidelines for choosing the right plants for the climate in Georgia?

Shopping at locally owned Independent Garden Centers are some of the best places you could shop to gain knowledge about your local climate.

What about some basic guidelines for choosing the right plants for the amount of shade/sun in a specific area of your yard?

Know what your area is like before you go shopping, read the tags and signs, and ask your garden center professional.

What should people do when they're planting young shrubs or trees?

Prepare the soil with the best ingredients possible. Garden soils, starter fertilizers, and mulch. Dig the hole with adequate width, but not too deep. Make sure that you mulch the trees and shrubs after planting to conserve moisture and shade the roots.

Do you have any tips for homeowners who really want to use a plant that isn't native to the area and has different ideal growing conditions (for example, a plumeria tree in a non-tropical area)?

Be prepared before you buy. Many plants will give you great pleasure in the summer, but they just won't winter over. Most of the time, if it's something you really love, you will be alright buying a new one next year, if you don't have the space to bring it inside.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?
