Choosing a Real Estate Lawyer: An Interview with Bryson M. Aldridge of Stubbs Cole Breedlove Prentis & Biggs P.L.L.C.

By Bryson Aldridge

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Stubbs Cole Breedlove Prentis and Biggs was founded in 1932 by Alston J. Stubbs. For three decades, Mr. Stubbs developed a law practice concentrating on residential and commercial real estate transactions and representing banking and commercial institutions. C. Thomas Biggs and James A. Cole Jr. joined the firm in the 1960s and Rick Prentis joined in the 1970s. While many attorneys have come and gone, and others have passed, the core group of attorneys that remained at Stubbs Cole continued to broaden the practice into other areas of the law. Tom Biggs and Rick Prentis form the foundation of the firm that I joined in 2006 and became a partner in 2011. J. Allen Crumpler joined the firm in 2011 as a partner to expand our criminal law practice and we have since added an associate, Sonya Mochegova. Stubbs Cole is now the oldest continuously practicing law firm in Durham and has been providing quality legal representation to client for over 82 years.

What is your company's mission?

Personal relationships with clients are the key to the past, present and future of Stubbs Cole. Our firm is a traditional general practice law firm that takes pride in being the adviser and counselor at law in all legal areas for individuals and small businesses. Because of the firm's longevity, we frequently represent multiple generations of a family. We want our clients to be able to pick up the phone and call their lawyer, whether it's dealing with a lawsuit, planning their estate, handling a speeding ticket or looking to purchase or sell a house.

What are some of the services your company provides?

As a cornerstone of our practice, our attorneys work with commercial and residential real estate developers, home owners, home buyers, corporations and financial institutions in all aspects of real estate law and real property practice. We represent the buyer or the seller in residential and commercial real estate transactions. Beginning with the title examination, through the closing process, to the conveyance of title, our attorneys and staff have the experience to guide our clients through the process.

When buying or selling a home, why should you seek out an attorney with real estate expertise?

Every transaction is different and has its own challenges and timelines. Although most are form driven, real estate contracts have become much more complex. It is important that consumers understand the nuances of these contracts and the process of buying a house, which is likely is the most important and expensive purchase that they will make for their families. What is the best way for people to reach you and or your company?
