Broadhurst Gallery: Bringing Beauty to the World

By S. Mathur

Judy Broadhurst, owner of Broadhurst Gallery in Pinehurst NC, recognizes the effort that goes into producing great art. "I've had a lifelong admiration for artists and the beauty they create. I've had the wonderful opportunity to work with many different artists, with many different visions, styles and motivations. But no matter how different they are, each are working in their own way to bring more beauty to the world - and I love being a part of that of that process."

Broadhurst Gallery is focused on finding great artists and helping them to exhibit their work. "Finding new artists is part of the fun of having a gallery," she explains. "For me to choose to an artist, I first need to genuinely like their work. I do give thought to the possibility of sales, but I wholeheartedly believe that great work will find an appreciative audience." Next, she looks at the artist's career-to-date to see what kind of work they've produced over time and where else they've been represented.

Variety is important, too. "I do not invite an artist into the gallery if I already have someone else whose work is similar," says Broadhurst. Many of her buyers, she explains, are looking for contemporary paintings and sculptures - but others are looking for something little less avant-garde, which is why she also carries the work of more traditional artists like Texas still-life artist Jerry Weers. "It's my job to connect artists with those who are most inclined to understand and appreciate their work," says Broadhurst.

Broadhurst Gallery opened twenty-seven years ago with work from artists in North Carolina and New York City. It now shows work by artists from all over the country, but New York artists like Bruce Dorfman and Ailene Fields are still strongly represented among the exhibits. Exhibit spaces include two floors of display rooms and and an outdoor sculpture garden. Gallery events include openings and Gallery Talks, which allow people to meet their favorite artists.

Broadhurst, who is credited with almost single-handed bringing art to the Sandhills, adds that "Pinehurst is a great place to live. Obviously, many people are here for the golf - but I am pleased with how many also find time for other interests. Whether you wish to become a true collector, or to simply choose a piece or two that speaks to you, all of our lives are enriched by a greater understanding of art and the beauty it brings to the world. I'm happy to be a part of bringing that joy to people here in Pinehurst."

Broadhurst Gallery is located at 212 Midland Road in Pinehurst, NC.
