Bridging Durham Community and Duke University through Coffee, Lounge Space

By Kelly Church

Located just behind Duke University's Wilson Dorm, Duke Coffeehouse serves as a "glorious link between the university and the Durham community." The coffeehouse welcomes all students, faculty and members of the community to enjoy a nice cup of coffee during the school year. Duke Coffeehouse is also a place for musicians to play, even featuring a one-day music festival in April every year.

"When we say the coffeehouse is a chill spot, we mean that the space is one of the most relaxing, inviting spots on campus," Neppala says. "Because of its late hours and secluded location, students have always found the coffeehouse to be an escape from the often homogenous and stressful Duke environment. This is bolstered by our mural-filled walls and alternative music choices."

The coffeehouse is decorated with couches and study tables for plenty of room to work or study. Duke Coffeehouse is a one-stop-shop for any coffee beverage, caffeinated and non-caffeinated. Neppala uses coffee beans from Counter Culture, a Durham-based coffee roaster that provides fair-trade beans. Duke's also offers an assortment of specialty teas to add to the comfy and cozy work or study environment.

"[We recommend first-time customers] try our $1 pour-over coffee," Neppala says. "First-time customers should also definitely try our milkshakes, popular among students late-night for obvious reasons, or any of our Durham-based Sangha teas."

The coffeehouse features live music and other events throughout the school year, even a day-long music festival in April (this year on April 1st!) called Brickside. Most shows at Duke Coffeehouse are local musicians and tickets are affordable for students and non-students. Visit dukecoffeehouse.org or their Facebook page to find an updated show schedule.

The coffeehouse is open every night during the school year, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The space, which features a P.A. system, vocal and instrumental microphones, stands and DI boxes, can be rented out for up to 200 people. Email dukecoffeehouse@gmail.com to inquire about booking the space.
