Assessing Your Home Insurance Coverage: An Interview with Lee Barrett of Asheville Insurance Center

By Lee Barrett

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Asheville Insurance Center was founded in 2010 by Lee Barrett. Lee has almost 30 years of insurance experience, which includes over 22 years of claims experience. This gives us the ability to customize your insurance coverage to protect you from the worst.

What are some of the services your company provides?

We are a full service insurance agency, we offer custom Home, Auto and Business packages tailored for the customers needs, we offer commercial insurance, workers com, rental property, coastal property, event insurance, and also insurance for your toys.

Please briefly explain the idea of home insurance to our readers, what it is, why it was created, etc.

Home insurance was originally designed as a FIRE policy, over time it has evolved into an all risk policy. The original purpose was to protect the home owner from a catastrophe loss, and that is still the main function of Home Insurance, the Home policy also provides liability coverage for you and your family.

What are the advantages of working with a local agent, rather than a popular online insurance source?

The advantage of working with a local agent gives you a representative with the big box companies. If you have a problem with the Big Box companies and you call them directly, you are talking to their employees. As a local agent I work for you. However, because we bring the business to the Big Box companies we are normally able to get things done quicker, and normally in your favor. Also with a local agent you have someone to talk with face to face, we get to know you as a person, not a policy number, and you talk to the same person each and every time.

What is the deductible and how does the insurer decide on the amount?

In the event of a claim the deductible is the portion that you pay and the insurance company pays the balance. Normally the higher the deductible the lower the cost of the insurance, BUT you should never carry a deductible higher than what you afford to pay in the event of a claim, without causing yourself another economic loss.

Do most property protection policies include dwelling, other structures, and personal property?

YES, However everything keys off of the dwelling coverage, it is very important that your dwelling coverage is adequate to rebuild you home, your other structure coverage is normally 10% of the dwelling coverage, this coverage additional structures on your property that ARE NOT connected to your house. We can offer a higher limit of coverage if needed. Your Personal Property is all the stuff that you would move out of the house if you were to move, OR if you could pick up your home, flip it over and shake it, what falls out is your personal property. Both your Home, Other Structures and Personal Property should be insured with Replacement Cost Coverage

What does the personal liability part of my policy cover? Will the insurer pay for medical expenses as well?

The Personal Liability part provides coverage for injuries and damages to other people when you are negligent. The coverage extends to all your family members that reside within the home. If a dead tree falls from your property onto your neighbors house, this is the portion of the policy that pays to fix your neighbors house. If someone gets hurt at your home this is the coverage that protects you in case they sue you. This coverage is very affordable and we recommend at least $500,000 (NOTE if your auto is involved then your auto policy come into play.

Do you have anymore tips for someone who is out their home insurance policy?

Your home is most people's largest financial investment or debt. Make sure yor are properly insured. As an Independent Insurance Agent I can shop the market to find you the right amount of coverage at the right price for your situation.
