"My most favorite thing about owning our gallery is helping my customers find something nice to hang in their homes that really makes them happy," Baynes says. "Often it's something very personal, like a family heirloom or photo of someone special, sometimes with small personal effects included."
Sidney Baynes says he's "been an artist for as long as [he] can remember." His company, Baynes & Company, is a Wendell, NC custom framing business. After receiving his degree in business management from North Carolina State University, he combined his two paths by opening up Baynes & Company with his father in the same town he grew up in. The storefront offers custom framing and is paired with a fine art gallery, featuring work from local artists.
A big part of the company's business is shadowboxes. Over the last 35 years, Baynes says Baynes & Company has framed unique items including a World War II German Luger pistol, a baseball mitt, a tribal shield from Africa, and autographs from people like Ty Cobb, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.
The gallery part of Baynes & Company features work North Carolina artists, and even Baynes himself. The artwork doesn't just include paintings either; the store also displays pottery, woodcarvings and more. Baynes says one of the most popular types of artwork they display is N.C. Coastal art and tobacco related work. The store's gallery is several rooms covered in two and three-dimensional artwork that customers can wander around and find exactly what they're looking for, and get it custom framed on-site.
"As an independently owned small gallery, we have had to take a unique approach to our business," Baynes says. "We specialize in customer service and guarantee satisfaction. We always try to do each job perfectly so that our customers will return and also spread the word about our shop."
