2014 Interior Design Trends: An Interview with Jean Ehmke of JeanE Kitchen and Bath Design, Inc.

By Jean Ehmke

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

JeanE Kitchen and Bath Design, Inc. was founded by Jean Ehmke. We are a full service company providing expert kitchen and bath design, selection and supply of products, general contracting, and project management.

What are some of the services your company provides?

The talented designers at JeanE Kitchen and Bath Design can help with everything from hourly design work to managing a complete remodel or installation on a new construction project. We make the complicated process of selecting cabinetry, countertops, flooring, fixtures, appliances, lighting, and much more easier for our clients.

What are some of the elements I can include in my bathroom to make it appear more modern?

If you are going for a modern look in your bathroom, you need to keep it simple. Suspended cabinets with slab doors and drawer fronts are very popular right now. The countertops and tile should not have too much pattern. Keep it sleek looking, but don't be afraid to mix in different textures.

How do you see fabrics and textures being used in bathrooms today?

Fabrics are a wonderful way to bring color and texture into a bathroom. The most common area for fabric to be used is in the window treatments, but some bathrooms also have seating areas where you can have fun with the furniture as well as pillows. Other textures can be incorporated in the tile, countertops, or a dimensional wall covering.

Would you say lighter colored wood or darker colored is the current trend?

Right now, painted cabinets are very popular in the kitchen and bathroom. They are typically a white or creamy color, but many people are incorporating an island or hutch in a different painted color or a darker wood stain. The sky's the limit on color choices, and many people want to personalize their spaces.

What are some design features for kitchens that are popular currently?

The kitchen is becoming the center of family activity and needs to serve many purposes: cooking, dining, entertaining, homework center, home office to name a few. Planning zones for the activities that need to be incorporated is extremely important. Storage and organization are also key. Incorporate drawers, roll-out trays, tray dividers, cutlery dividers, and other accessories to make efficient use of every inch of cabinetry.
